WELLINGTON, Maroh 17.
North Island people are much interested in an expedition to the South Seas that is being equipped by Miss Haatie, a wealthy Edinburgh lady, who was for some time staying in Wellington, and who is now at Wanganui. For the cruise, which is to last about six months, a schooner his been chartered at the cost of £200 a month. Mr F..W. Christian, who has made a study of the Polynesian languages,- accompanies the party in the capacity of honorary interpreter, and Mr F. F. C. Huddleston, formerly of the Hermitage, Mount Cook, and now ot Wanganui, goes as naturalist and collector. A doctor and an experienced photographer, who was formerly with the English farm of Marion, and Co,, have also been engaged. Miss Hastie is an enthusiast in natural science, and it is probable that this may be the forerunner of similar trips to New Guinea and other parts. ' . • ' ■ .'
