CHRISTCHURCH DRAINAGE BOARD.

The Chrisfcchurch Drainage Board met yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs J. Deans (in the chair), R. M. Taylor, C. Burgess, W. E. Samuels, and Hill Fisher. A special meeting of the Board was first held. In view of the deficit for the incoming year, it was resolved that an extra rate of $d in the £ be levied on all rateable property in Christchurch and the suburban districts under the Suburban Districts Act, and that a special meeting be held on April 14th to confirm the resolution. The ordi< nary meeting of the Board was then held.

The Engineer reported with reference to the deepening of Rhodes's main drain, that the work would have a beneficial effect on adjoining lands and would cost from £7 to £8. It was decided to go on with the work at once. Repairs amounting to about £12 were required by the low-pressure piston of the eastern pumping station. The necessary repairs were sanctioned. The report, as a whole, was adopted. A deputation, consisting of the Mayor of i Linwood and two of the borough councillors, waited on the Board with reference to the Tuam street drain. They offered to raise £800 for its construction, and asked the Drainage Board to contribute a sum not to exceed £20 a year for twenty years towards' the interest of the sinking fund. On former occasions the Drainage Board had been willing, to do the work but had been hampered by want of funds. The Board was only asked to contribute one-third of the cost, the Borough of Linwood and , residents near the drain paying the other two-thirds.- ' ,

The Chairman, in answer, stated that it would probably be necessary to get the opinion of the solicitors as to whether the Board could legally do the work. Eventually it was resolved—." That tliia. Board defray one-third of the cost of the Tuam street drain, such cost not to exceed £270." .

Messrs Kruse and Borghfeldt, as ft deputation from farmers in the Papanui district, pointed out that theic lands, though formerly dry, were now liable to lie flooded from the water which came from branch drainsinto the main drain. They asked that a now drain be cut to Horseshoe lake, or else that a drain, already made, be deepened. The engineer was instructed to report; upon the matter, and it was decided to ask the residents how muoh they would be prepared- to pay towards the oostJ of the work.

Messrs R. W. Fereday and J. Little interviewed the Board with reference to an obstruction to the flow of the Wairarapa stream, alleged to have been caused by the latter. After hearing the statements on both sides the Board agreed that it was impossible to give permission for, the erection of any dam that would cause a nuisance to neighbours, through raising the level of the stream. In reply to a letter from the St. Albans Borough Council, the engineer was instructed to send a copy of the estimates previously formulated for the construction of a brick drain in Edgeware road*
