NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING CLUB.

The first day's racing of the Autumn Meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club was held on Saturday. Though the weather was threatening the day kept fine, and there was a large attendance. The feature of the sport, which was interesting throughout, was the splendid performance of Wildwood in the chief harness race. The imported horse has long been held to be the best in the land, and he established his title in unmistakeable fashion on Saturday. He went from end to end of the two miles without a skip, and finished well within himself in smin lsec, which constitutes the harness record for the colony. The sum of £2058 10s was handled on the totalisator. Results :— MAIDEN HANDICAP (in saddle), of 30 soys; second 5 soys from the stake. Two miles. 304. Mr E. Dorothy and Worthington went on second and third passing Mace's, and when Dorothy headed Jessamine, just before entering the straight, Worthington soon ranged alongside, and, getting to the front at the distance, won by three lengths, Jessamine, six lengths back, third. Gwynne, getting quickly under way, was in front passing Mace's, and although she left her teet more than once going down the back she had a substantial lead from Jennie 111. passing the stand with a mile gone. Ipswich and Dictator were third and fourth, Allerton, who had broken badly, being quite out of it. Keeping her advantage all down the back Gwynne entered the straight with a strong lead, and won by forty yards from Dictator, Jennie HI. thirty yards further back. Time, smin2Bsec. Dividend, £2. Nghia and Imperial were together in front at the end of a mile, but both broke up going down the back. At the end of a mile Uncle Tom was leading from Ruby 11., Grenadier being next. Wildwood had, however, made up a great deal of his handicap and was running close behind Brookholm, with three or four of the beaten lot behind him. Before Mace's was reached Wildwood had gained fourth place, and was really Within striking distance of the leaders. Brookholm went •on with Wildwood, and the pair .were almost on terms with Uncle Tom and Ruby 11. at the home turn. Before the distance was reached Wildwood was in command, and, slowing up, he won by a length and a half from Brookholm, Ruby 11., just outside the distance, finished third. Time, smin lsec.
