". *Mr. Moore, M.fl.R., yesterday tele-, gtephed to the Minister for Railways, ask-; ing for free carriage of consignments for the relief of sufferer* by the bush fires, and received a reply that the matter had been referred to Mf Konavne. His Worship the Mayor has received the following subscriptiohe towards the relief of the sufferer* by the Oxford fire:—Staadish and Preeoe £1 Is, Mrs S. Basset* £5, M. Harris and Son £2 2s. In response to the application of the Mayor of St. Albans the Railway Department have consented to carry all parcels of clothing, Ac, for relief of the sufferers by the bush fires, addressed to the Secretary of the Relief Committee, West Oxford, feee of charge. Mr Wayinouth mil be pleased to see to the forwarding or any parcels left either at St. Albans Borough Cauncil office, hia private house, Andover street, or at his office, 191 Hereford street. Mr Weymouth sent up a parcel last night. At the meeting of the delegates of the local bodies 3'esterday, the Mayor of Christchurch said he had arranged to have a meet" ing to see what could be done for the relief of the Oxfckd sufferers on Monday next. He thought that as there were delegates representing the various suburban Councils, it waa a good Opportunity of bringing the matter before them. He had received seventeen subscriptions, and he hoped that the delegates from the* various local bodies present Would .do their best to ensure sympathetic assistance from the people of their several districts. , At the meeting he would have subscription lists, and he trusted to see them well filled up. The following are the additional insurances on the West Oxford fire:—F. Weld, £100 (Standard); R. Mills, £40 (Standard); "Dorhmann, £50 (Standard); J. J. Pendray, £300 (South British). East Oxford—A. Henderson, £75 (Phoenix). Total amount of insurance on West Oxford fires, £1600. "(PRESS ASSOCIATION'TJ—-ORAM.) WELLINGTON, January 20. The Minister for Education is to leave for the Forty-mile bush district om Saturday, for the purpose of gaining an idea of the havoc caused by the bush fires. It is alleged that some of the worst fires on the hills to the right of tbe Hutt Valley, Were cause by private individuals improperly starting burns. Detectives are making enquiries.
