At the adjourned inquest at Coromandel |on the remains of the child of Mary R—m« bottom, the jury returned a verdict that the death of Eleanor Gladys Ramsbottom, infant, was caused about June —, 1897, near Long Bay, by being abandoned and left to die in the bußh by her mother. The merchants are urging Government to refund promptly tho duty in the case of j the late fire on the wharf, as provided for in*- [ the supplementary estimates. WOODVILLE, January 20. [ The first of a series of bush fire cases is being heard in the Court. The parties belong to Maharahara, and the plaintiff claims £100 damages through a fire, alleged to have been lit by the defendant, destroy-; ing his property. The defence is that tnV fire originated either on the plaintiffs pro* Serty or on his neighbour's apart from the efendant. The case is proceeding. WELLINGTON, January 20. The Wellington Gas Company have de* clared a dividend of 5 per cent., making 10 per cent, for the year. The Trades and Labour Council passed a resolution in favour of a revision of the constitution of the Legislative Council, but declined to advocate its total abolition. The Council also determined to wait on the Premier with reference to labont legislation. NELSON, January 20. A man named Frederick Launcelot Louisson, who waa a jockey in Wellington, according to a letter found on him, was arrested this morning on a charge of stealing about £6 from the till of the Wakefield Hotel.
