THE HORSE FIEND.
So far the police have not succeeded in unravelling the mystery attached to the stabbing of Mr Buckley's entire horse Zulu, which was killed on Friday evening. Several members of the force were at work all day yesterday but without success, regarding the establishment of the identity of the perpetrator of the outrage. The theory of the police is that the man must have ridden up on horseback, and that he always goes on his expeditions mounted. Another theory is that the man is a lunatic escaped from the Sunnyside Asylum, where he was confined and under treatment for precisely that form of lunacy. The police are also investigating this matter. One sequel of this last atrocity 13 that a number of horseowners are employing men with firearms to sleep in their stables ; but, unless care is takeu the outcome may possibly be that some innocent person will be shot by mistake. It is a curious fact that for sixteen months, being tho period when these horsestabbmg cases have been occurring, not a single case was reported. Where the man was during that time it is of course impoisible to say. If ever he is caught redhanded he will no doubt make a desperate resistance, as anyone convicted of a similar offence may be sentenced to imprisonment for life.
