LYTTELTON REGATTA, 1898.
A meeting of the committee of this regatta was held on Friday evening. The commodore, Mr A. Chalmers, presided. Entries for the events were received as follows :— First class yacht race 3, handicap yacht race 6, two-raters 4, ships' boats rowing 2, handicap sailing 2, boys' canoe sailing 12, senior double sculls 5, senior pairs 6, youths' double sculls 7, youths' pairs 6, maiden double sculls 9, maiden pairs 9, junior pairs 6, junior sculls 9, youths' single sculls 7. For the rowing events there are entries from the following clubs :—Star, Wellington, Port Chalmers, Dunedin Amateur, Wairewa, Cure, Avon, Union, Canterbury, V.M.C.A., Akaroa and Lyttelton. general satisfaction was expressed at the exceptionally large number of entries. For the rowing events the entries are probably the largest ever received for any regatta in New Zealand. The hon. treasurer reported that for the sole right of the confectionery booths the tender of Mr F. Harvey had been accepted. It was also reported that the officers had arranged for the hulk Tower Hill, an old-time trading brig of 250 tons, to be blown up. The vessel will be moored out towards the reef, and will be set on fire about half an hour before the explosion is set off. The secretary reported that the flagship tickets would be circulated early in the week, and that arrangements had been made with the New Zealand Shipping Company and Captain Martin for tbe use of the barque Opawa as a flagship.
