WELLINGTON HARBOUR.
The long-disciisaed question of improving the light on Somes Island, in the centre of the harbour, is at length settled. The Government took up the position that there was no legal onus on them to maintain the light, but, without prejudice to this attitude, offered, if the Harbour Board would pay part of the cost of replacing the present sixth order light by ono of the second order, to provide the lantern. The cost of the improvement, including a new tower, is estimated at £1300. The Government will give the lantern used at Farewell Spit, and the Harbour Board has voted £800 towards the cost of conversion.
