Drunkenness.—Margaret Wickham, for this offence, was fined 10s, or forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Two first offenders were fined 6s each, with the usual alternative.
Illegally on Premises.—Matilda Harrison, charged with being illegally on the premises of Alfred Telfer, was convicted and discharged. Alleged Vagrancy. —James Eastwood was charged with having insufficient lawful means of support. Mr Kippenberger appeared for the accused. Acting-Detective Fitzgerald said that the accused had been in the town since the Grand National meeting and was always consorting with thieves, and for the last few years had spent most of his time in gaol. Last Sunday he had discovered some spielers, of whom the accused was one, playing " two up " in the Park, and the accused had escaped by jumping into the river on seeing the detective. Corroborative evidence was given by Detectives McGrath, of Dunedin, and Livingstone. William Wood, coach proprietor, said that the accused had been in his employ for a week past, and had given every satisfaction. He had to collect fares on the coach, and had never been found to be dishonest. The accused said he used to have a small chemist's shop previous to his being employed by Mr Wood. In answer to Mr Beethara, Mr Wood said that he looked .on the engagement between the accused and himself as still existing. Hie Worship said that under those circumstances he would have to dismiss the case. Alleged Labcbny. — Harry Dalton charged with having on October 25th stolen a spade, the property of P. H. Cannon, of Riccarton, was sentenced to lour teen days' imprisonment.
