ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
j A young man named John Newton met •with a fatal accident at the Christchurch j Meat Company's Works, Timaru, on Saturj day afternoon. He was at work in the j manure department, carrying a 2cwt sack of manure, when he slipped on the concrete , floor and fell heavily. In his fall he broke ihis collarbone and injured his spine so severely that from the waist downwards he was completely paralysed. Doctors were at once telephoned for, but could do nothing. The youn? man lingered till eleven o'clock on Saturday night, when death put an end to his sufferings. On Sunday morning a young man, named L. Couch, was diving from the side of the i dock to the water, some distance below, and as he took off bis foot slipped, with the result that he struck his head on one of the concrete ledges a few inches below the j surface. He received a very severe wound on the head, and was completely stunned, but fortunately rose to the surface and was pulled out by those bathing near him. He was carried to his father's house about 200 yards away, where remedial measures were applied, and he regained consciousness. Hβ will, however, be laid up for some days.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DANNEVIRKE, November 6. Parson, a porter at the Dannevirke railway station, fell this morning and a shunting engine went over hi 3 leg juat above the ankle. Amputation will be necessary.
