SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Sydenham Borough Council met last evening. Present —The Mayor (Mr N. K. Bowdpn),and Crs. H.illey, Hadfield, Mnffett, Lafferty, Hirtzell, Man hire, Bell, Cutler and Large.

An apology for absence, on account of ill-health, was received from Cr. Jacques. Circulars were received from the Dnnedin and Cove Borough Councils, forwarding resolutions protesting against the Municipal Franchise Enlargement Bill. A motion was passed endorsing the principles contained in the circulars.

An application from the Carlyle Cricket Club, to form a pitch on the east"side of the Park was granted on the Fame terms as those given to the Sydenham Young People's Association.

1 The Drainage Board wrote, asking if the Council intended to pay £4 4s 9d, the balance of penalties collected on the 1896 rate. It was decided that the letter be received and lie on the table.

The Finance Committee reported receipts £390 11s 9d. Accounts amounting to £52 8s lid were passed for payment. The balance of accounts was as follows:— Credit—Separate account, £290 10s sd; interest account, £466 17s 6d ; loan account, fixed deposit, £1900; current account, £3182 8s 4d. Debit—General account, £4504 2s. Adopted.

The Works Committee reported, in reference to Mr R. M. Taylor's request for the completion of the concrete channelling and asphalting on the Waltham road, that the Council had made no promise to do the work as stated It had been held over on account of the road requiring regrading and widening. There was no vote on the estimates this year for the work, and the Committee thought every effort should be made to widen the road before doing the work. The appointment of Superintendent Smith of the Christchuich Fire Srigade as Honorary Fire Inspector was recommended. The report was adopted. The following alternative tenders from the Christchurch Gas Company were received :—£4 per annum for three years, £3 15s per annum for five years, £3 10s per annum for seven years. It was decided not to accept any of the tenders for a specified time.

It was decided to close the Council's offices on Novemher 9th and 12th.
