THE DUNEDIN ELECTION.
(By Telegraph.)
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
DUNEDIN, October 14. «
■ Mr Sligo leaves for Wellington to-day. The Otago Daily Times commenting on the election says that it trusts that the Government will accept the protest of yesterday as a final one, and in future leave the Dunedin electors severely alone in their choice of a representative. The candidate and constituency are alike to be congratulated. "We are particularly gratified with the result, because not very long ago it would have been thought impossible for the Opposition to carry a single election. That they should now be able to do so, and by a large majority, is a severe lesson to the Government, and should warn them that there are limits to endurance, and that not all their self-eulogiums and claptrap can beguile the thinking body of the people into mistaking autocracy for good government. Yesterday's election is the handwriting on the wall."
When returning thanks for his election, Mr Sligo said that a miner at Hyde, Mr A. M. Beer, had asked him to say that the Government took steps to bring down from Central Otago every man on the works they could lay their hands on in order to vote against him.
Mr A. Sligo on Wednesday evening received the following telegram of congratulation from Mr* James Allen, M.H.K. :— "Heartiest congratulations on your great victory. It is the public answer to Mr Seddon's Budget and Mr Ward's interference."
