TRAINING SHIP FOR NEW ZEALAND.

The President of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr K. W. Roper) under instruction from the General Committee, has forwarded the following letter to the Premier:—

" Sir, —I have the honour to direct your attention to the enclosed ctrcuiar re ' training ship' for New Zealand. As. evidence of the popular feeling upon this subject, I may mention that letters strongly advocating the establishment of a training ship have been received from twenty-six public bodies, the names of which are attached. My Committed feel that this matter should be brought specially under your notice, as-it is in complete accord with the expressed policy of the Government to provide technical education for our youths. A training ship would be a simple and efficacious mean, of initiating a system of technical education, and would at the same time open up to our lads a profession which must necessarily play a most -Bportant part in the future of New Zes&od. ___sting that you will at an early da*e bringrthis important question before the Souse. "E. W. Rophr, " Chairman of Committee."

The following are the names of the public bodies referred to in the letter :—Borough Councils — Dunedin, Napier, Wool-ton, Sydenham, Thames, Naseby, Kaiapoi, Foxtonj Linwood, St. Albans, Rangiora, Lawrence, P-lmerston. Harbour Boards— Patea, WeHrogfcon, Waitara, Otago, Aaok--land, Coromandel, New Plymouth, Grey-, mouth. Chambers of Commerce—Dunedin, Auckland, Wellington, Napier. Progressive Liberal Association and Industrial

Association — Christchurch. Replies are still commg in. The cirouhu: referred to has been published.
