THE MURDERER BUTLER.
The details of the bill of costs rendered to the New South Wales Government from San Francisco in connection with the extradition of the Glenbrook murderer constitute a legal and literary curiosity. The chargesof Messrs Cormac and Donohue, attorneys, for their services in " preparing cases, trial, and arguments" before the Hon. K. H. Heacock, Commissioner of the United States Circuit Court, amount to 16,750d01, and their fee is certified to by Mr Heacock as being reasonable. Among the moneys expended by Messrs Cormac and Donohue, ami charged for by them, of course, over and above their fee, are some amusing items. Mr £. H. Heacock himself participates to a small extent in these, and there are payments for witnesses' expenses, boat hire, stenographic work, clothing for the prisoner, and for transportation of the prisoner. One Nathan Joseph received a fee of 7dol for examining and appraising the articles of clothing found among Butler's effects, and a person named Max Cohn was paid lOdol for examining and appraising the jewellery found among the prisoner's effects, while an analytical chemist received 25d0l for a chemical analysis of poison found in Butler's hat. The Sheriff of the city and county of San Francisco was paid 104dol for the board of the prisoner at the couuty gaol, and, most curious perhaps of all, there was a payment of 40dol to a tradesman for plumbing work in Butler's cell.
