CANTERBURY CRICKET ASSOCIATION.
The Committee of the Canterbury Crioket Association met at Warner's Hotel vester day afternoon. Present —F. \Vil,Hno (Chairman), C. 11. Smith, T. D. Harman H C. Ridley, J A. Caygill, H. D. Carter,' P C. Gerard, It. C. Raphael aud C. Clark. Aa apology for absence was received from Mr Wynn Williams.
The Auckland Association wrote, stating that they would be glad to receive a visit from the Canterbury representative team The annual meeting was fixed for September 25th. Mr Tapper was chosen auditor. The Secretary referred to the death of the late Mr E. P. Barnes. It was unanimously decided to place on record on the minutes a motion expressing deep regret at Mr Barnes's death, and paying a high tribute to his many qualities as a sportsman and & man. Mr Gerard said that the verdict at the inquest on the late Mr Barnes tended to give people the idea that deceased was a drunkard. He (the speaker) had known Mr Barnes for many years and had never known him the worse for drink. Mr Smith said he oould bear out what Mr Gerard had said. He too thought that the verdict had created a false impression in people's minds. Mr Ridlky said that the prominent and active part Mr Barries had taken iv cricket would show that he had not been a drunkard. The Chairman said he had known Mr Barnes for years and had nevur seen him the worse for liquor. Mr Caygill spoke to the same effect, as also did Mr Rai'Uael. The United Club wrote, asking the ruling of the Association regarding the interpretation of one of the rules of cricket. Mr Caygill moved —" That the question of giving a ruling lay outside the functions of the Association, and that a reply be cent accordingly ; at the same time it be pointed out that the New Zealand Cricket Council would be the more correct body to whom to appeal." The motion was carried. A further question on a ruling from the United Club was deferred till the annual meeting, and Messrs Wilding, Caygill, Carter and Raphael were chosen a subcommittee to report on the matter to the general meeting after having sent a copy of the United Club's letter to the opposing captain and got his reply. On the motion of Mr Ridley, a hearty vote of congratulation was passed to the Sydenham and Addingtoii United Club on the success of their reuent Art Union.
