"Wtekly Press and Referee." ILLUSTRATIVE WHIST HAND WITH NOTES BY " CAVENDISH." Combination of calling and unblocking. Trump card two of clubs, turned by Wesfc. Trick 1. N

Trick I.—South begins to call for trumps and to unblock.

Trick 2.—lt will be observed thatii South had called with the 8 and the 3 he would have blocked his partner's suit. I make no remark on the lead of ace from ace and four small, nor on the lead ot fourth best remaining in hand after the lead of ace. While admitting these leads are disputed, I may add that North's usual play is on the lines given.

Trick 4.—1 have long given up trumping with any but the smallest in hand when about to lead trumps after a force. Information as to number is equally conveyed by trumping with the lowest and then leading the fourth beat of those in hand. In the aotual case the 8 is too valuable a card to use when the 3 will do.

Trick 6.—The finesse, though unsuccessful, is quite justifiable. Of course, South plays knave on his partner's 10 that he may go on with trumps if North has no more, and the finesse succeeds.

Trick 7.—1 think West's lead of heart, though unlucky, is better than, spade or club. As the cards happen to lie, any other lead would win another trick ; but that proves nothing. Trick 8. —The end of the hand can now be foreseen, as the important cards can be counted. By the English method of scoring five up with honours, the game was abandoned as lost. I have therefore had to place the remaining cards in their most probable positions, with the exception of those in Souths hand, wliich was looking over.
