LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Grubb, Hobden, Webb, RadcUffe, Owen, Cook, Brice, and Dalley. Leave of absence was grauted to Cr. Brown, who was absent at Akaroa with his steamer. The minutes having been read, Cr. Brice moved the first motion standing in his name, " That the valuer, Mr C. C. McCarthy, be appointed for the years 1898 and 1899." Cr. Radi_liffe seconded the motion. After discussion it was finally resolved " That the appointment of a valuer be dealt with at the next meeting."' I The Finance Committee reported receipts for the fortnight £309 8s 2d, and advised payments amounting to. £145 7s. After allowing for this payment the overdraft would be £210. The Foreman of Works reported on the employment of the men during the fortnight. He also estimated the cost of certain works. It was decided to lay a line of pipes from St. David street to Oxford street. A proposition to lay down a wood crossing as an experiment was negatived. The Estates Committee reported-on the probable cost of adding two rooms to the building on the Council's property at Charing Cross, and also on the cost of planting, &c.,' at Sherwood. The Mayor referred to the resolution passed last meeting to compel by means of a by-law householders to put ventilating shafts on the drains in their properties. He said a suggestion had been made that as the householders would by this means be compelled to ventilate the Council's sewers, it would be only fair that the Council should bear part of the cost. He recommended the suggestion to Councillors. The Water Supply Committee reported on the cleaning out of I the reservoir, and detailed some repairs [-required therein. The Committee were empowered to obtain the opinion of an expert as to the safety or otherwise of pumping straight through to Lyttelton while the repairs were being, carried out. The Committee Avere also empowered to get the necessary pipes. An enlarged handsomely framed portrait of the late Mayor, Mr J. Stinson, waa presented to the Council and duly acknowledged, Cr. Webb gave notice to move that the fowl by-law bo amended by reducing tlie distance from a boundary fence to 3ft.
