Clarke, Agent-General for Victoria, that they are unable to purchase Australian horses as remounts under five years of age, but are willing to purchase seven-year-olds. The impression prevails in military circles that Argentine horses are stronger and hardier than Australian animals. The War Office is making enquiries as to the price of Australian compressed hay and oats. PICTURES FOR SYDNEY. Margetson's picture, " The sea hath its perils," has been purchased for 3000£s, and Yeend King's "The garden by the river" for sOOgs, on behalf of the New South Wales Government for the Sydney Art Gallery. WEST AUSTRALIAN LOAN. The Western Australian 8 per cent, loan is quoted at a J- premium. BRITISH IMPORTS AND EXPORTS. The imports of the United Kingdom for April showed a comparative decrease of £672,245, while the exports bad increased to £1,249,895.
