ENGLISH WAITERS AND TIPS.
The case of " Mills v Lunn" was tried before Mr. Lutnley Smith in the Westminster County Court recently, and was a claim for £4 10a for wages by a waiter from the defendant, a restaurateur. It Was admitted that the plaintiff acted us waiter for the time he stated, bat it was a custom not to pay waiters wages. The plaintiff said he was engaged as "extra waiter " at 3e a day, and he sought to recover for five weeke. He certainly got tips, but they were very email, about 2s 6fl a day, and it cost him Is 6d to 2s a day to get his dinner out, as the defendant did not give him his dinner. Hβ knew foreign waiters paid restaurant keepers a percentage out of the tips of the generous Uritish public, but he uever worked liko that. His Honour thought the plaintiff should have been told he was to work for tip 3 alone, and found for him for the amount claimed.
