In the House of Commons Mr Hanbury, replying to a question asked by Mr Heaton, said the Government declined to incur the expenses of obviating the quarantining of colonists arriving by the mail steamers at Brindisi and Marseilles by reason of their embarking passengers from Bombay at-Aden. WOOD PAVING. The Municipal Council of Newcastle has decided to purchase 10,000 blocks of New South Wales mahogany and a similar quantity of black birch, to be selected by Mr Richards, City Surveyor of Sydney. The price is 116s per load. AUSTRALIAN HARD WOODS. Mr Gavan Scott, of Sydney, has arrived in London on a mission connected with the export of Australian hard woods to Europe. Berlin, April 18. Later details show that the Grand Duke of Meoklenberg Schwerin at the time of his suicide was in a high state of fever, which affected his mind. He escaped from the doctor under whose control he had been placed. HEAVY GUNS FOR PRETORIA. Capetown*, April 18. { A German steamer has loaded, at Delagoaßay, a battery of Heavy guns intended for Pretoria. FAST ATLANTIC SERVICE. Ottawa, April 18. Petersen's agreement for a fast Atlantic service involves Canada paying an annual subsidy of half a million dollars. .COMPENSATION FOR LYNCHING Washington, April 14. In a message to Congress President MdKinley advises the payment of the indemnity claimed by the Italian Government on behalf of three Italians lynched at New Orleans, Louisiana, in August last. The Italians were confined in Kahuovillo gaol on a charge of murdering Americans. An infuriated mob stormed the gaol and seized and lynched them.
