RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of this Council . ; was held on Friday evening to oonfinn a resolution to purchase a piece of land for widening King street. There were Mayor (Cγ. C. I. Jennings), Ore* Blaokett, Cone, Foster, Carinichael, Good, and Shank* land. A motion to confirm the resolution waa proposed and duly carried. The ordinary meeting was then held, the same Councillors being present, together with Ore. Sansom and Luxton. The Valuer* General wrote that the values of property under the Valuation of Land Act, 1896* would not be ready for the year 1897-8. The Clerk to the Ashley Road Board wrote notifying a meeting of the local bodieeon March 26th. A letter was received from Mr Geo. Murdoch, forwarding a cheque for £141 Os 6d, rent and insurance. The Secretary to the Fire Brigade wrote enclosing scale of fees recommended to be charged for the services of the Fire Brigade for attending fires outside the Borough. A circular was read pointing out that some officials are importing goods free of duty and selling the same in opposition to the. tradesmen of the country. It was decided to draw the attention of the member for the district to the matter. The Mayor reported on the Conference of looal bodies respecting the Ashley traffic bridge, and it was decided that the Council was of opinion that the Ashley Road Board should have the spending of the money voted for the Ashley bridge, but that the Council would not agree to contribute towards the maintenance of any work but the bridge. The Worka Committee reported that the Council Chamber, Fire Brigade Chambers, sheds and bell tower required painting, and the older buildings some repairs. Several fences were out of order. The contract for getting shingle out of the pit had been completed, and the shingle should be screened. The report was adopted. The Fire Brigade Committee reported that the check valve was not at present required; that a scale of charges for the brigade going outside the borough had been made out, and that it waa not advisable that the Road Board Should be asked to contribute towards the maintenance of the brigade. After some discussion it was decided to postpone consideration of the report until next meeting. It was decided to give the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade leave of absence to go to the Fire Brigade Conference at Port Chalmers. The financial statement showed— receipts £159 Os 6d; credit balance at Bank £166 Iβ 6d. Accounts were passed for payment amounting tc £136 14s. Mr George Thompson's tender for a culvert for £11 os was accepted ; that of theNorth«Canterbury Co-operative Stores for horse feed j and J. R. Blackett's for supply of keroaene. Xbe Council then adjourned.
