Mr Horry Lunn has purchased Skirmisher from Mr Reid. Pursestring, by Apremont—Aurifera, died on Sunday last. Boreas and Carriok are to be taken to Sydney at onoe. Senior Wrangler was sold in Dunedin on Saturday for £36. The Auckland pony Fair Nell was sent recentljrto Sydney. The Possible is to be shipped to England some time next month. Voltigeur will be taken to the Greymouth and other Coast meetings. Mr Stead's contribution to the D.J.C.'s First Eclipse Stakes was £80. Why Not, the winner of the Grand National of 1894, has been shot. Gipsy Grand ia to serve twenty approved mares at Mr Reid's Elderslie Stud. The Raglan Racing Club will hold the annual race gathering on March 19th. - The Riverton R.C. will hold their Annual Meeting on Easter Monday, April 19th. The owner fans abandoned his attention of taking Arquebus and Marino to Australia. Maximus was scratched for his engagements at 'Waimate directly the weights appeared. For once Messrs Stephenson and Hazlett's stable did not capture a single stake at the D.J.C. Autumn Meeting. Mr G. G. Stead, wife and family, leave Christchurch on their trip to England, via America, on the 10th inst. T. Loates has quite recovered from the accident that befel him a fortnight before the closing of the fiat race season. Valiant won the Moorefield Handicap on February 13th before being taken to Melbourne for the V.R.C. Meeting. The three-year-old Woolwich, by Artillery —-Tangi, changed hands in Dunedin last week for llgs, going to a country buyer. The Canterbury Jockey Club has approved of the alteration of the dates for the Westland Racing Club's meeting to Marsh 24th and 25th. The sceptics will by this time, it may be supposed, allow that Gold Medallist is unequalled among the two-year-olds of New Zealand. The Alma Stakes on the first day of the Y.A.T.C. Autumn Meeting, February 13th, fell to Mr S. Hordem's El Norte, by Nordenfeldt. Charles Wood, the famous jookey who had his license cancelled in 1838, has been reinstated, and is among the list of jockeys licensed for 1897. It iSoannounced that bookmakers will not be allowed on the racecourse or enclosures at Hastings during the Hawke's Bay J.O.s Autaxnn Meeting. Wild Man from Borneo, a Liverpool National winner, who was beaten by Norton in. his last race, is to be in future kept exclusively for hunting. Tho Wellington Racing Club have decided to add 500sovs to the Thompson Handicap in 1899, at the same meeting at whioh the first St. Leger is to be run. Twenty-two remain in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes (to be run at Ellerslie at Easter) after payment of second forfeit. The complete programme for the South Canterbury J.C.s Autumn Meeting on April 29th and 30th, appears in the Calendar. Hoar.- £600 will be distributed in stakes. Gold Medallist is to enjoy a spell from racing for some little time, but Multiform leaves in a few days for Hastings in charge ot his trainer to tako part in the Hawke's Bay Stakes. Soror, while being schooled by his owner, Mr H. Morrow, junr., at Wanganai on February 20th, fell, rolling over Mr Morrow, who sustained an injury to his spate. An Australian paper says:—Wallace has been put to some of thi beat of the St. Albans mares, and it is more than lik«y that he will ere long be sold to a atudmaster in England. The London Sportsman competition for the election of the beat sire to mate with O.R.M. tbe Prince of Wales's Thais engendered a lot of interest. Carbine was the aire selected by the judges. Erl King was handicapped at lOst 71b for the Sandown Grand Pnze Hurdle Race, which was to have been decided on February 13th. The top weight had 12st 9lb, and m™*^*-. **** w «%hted at list 2lb. r, Buddicombe sold Ranjpatea after he won a couple of races with him in midVtago, the unreliable bay having become very sore. The horse will probably not be raced ogam, but do duty as a station sire. Ihe restoration of a license for the diepensmg of liquor on the Forbury waa much appreciated last week, and, on Cup day especially, being in a position to aak a friend to " give it a nam* " was cam* of rejoifliag.
Byrne was rather badly injured when Lobo fell with him on the second day at Dunedin, as besides fracturing his collar bone the bone itself was splintered. The lad returned home to Oamaru on the Saturday. The Masterton R.C. advertise that money will be received for investment on the totalisator until 10 o'clock on the morning of the races, March 17th ; and that bookmakers or their agents will not be admitted to the course. The Chief Justice quashed the conviction of A. Champion, bookmaker, for alleged trespass on tbe Fcilding racecourse. His Honour considered the facts were identical with those in Ryan's case, in which he had already quashed the conviction. A facetious announcement was affixed at the Grand Hotel, Dunedin, on Cup day, which stated :—" By order, Owing to the wet weather, the bookmakers will not be Bresent8 resent at the Forbury racecourse to-day." _ course the D.J.C. will not allow metallicians on their course. The abridged programme, in card form, of the Wellington R.C.s Autumn Meeting is to hand. By a slip it was stated last week that the Suburban Handicap, of lOOsovs, was the principal event on the second day of the meeting. The Autumn Handicap has 200sovs added to it, and is the big item of the day. In telegraphing, tho amount the club has on fixed deposit was made to read £1500 instead of £800. The stewards of the Kaikoura Hack Racing Club have disqualified the horses Leo and Erica, who ran at the Boxing Day Meeting, the first for twelve months and the other for six months, for dishonest running, the disqualification to take effect from December 26th last. A. G. Miskm and F. Monk, nominators of the horse., were also disqualified in ao far that the races won by their nominations after the County Plate, in which the collusion is alleged to have taken place, were voided—the races being, besides the County Plate, tho Flying Handicap and Ladies' Bracelet.
