WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING.
First Day. (By Telegraph.) (from our special reporter). WANGANUI, March 4. The weather was favourable for the first day of the above meeting, and there was the largest attendance of visitors and local people seen on tbe coarse for a long time past. Speculation was brisk, and bookmakers were present from different parts of the colony. The sum of £6988 was passed through the totalisators, being £778 more than last year. Going down the back Bona Fide was displaced by Kanaka, Loveshot, Return going on next, with Waterstone whipping in. Kanaka led into the straight, bat fitter a punishing finish Loveshot got up and beat him on the post by a head, Return a length and a half away third, Ascot Vale and Orion's Belt fourth and fifth. Cos) 0 Secrecy went to the front from the fall of the flag, and was followed by Rossall, Tangaroa and Swift, and-they were in close order as the stand was passed the first time, but Rossall dropped back into fourth place shortly after. Going down the back the last time Tangaroa went up to Secrecy, and Swift also closed up, the race then resolving itself into a contest between the three, but Tangaro3, drawing away iv the last quarter, with something to spare, won, easing up in the last hundred yards, by three lengths, Swift a neck behind Secrecy third ; Rossall a poor fourth, Troubadour fifth. At the fall of the flag Heart Disease went to the head of affairs, Hautonga at once dropping some lengths behind the others. Turning into tho straight Headford had drawn level with Heart Disease, and a little further on led. Going past the stand he drew out, and Heart Disease and Tell Tale were his nearest attendants, Fireworks having fallen. Going dowu the back Heart Disease came to grief, and Headford continued to lead, finally winning easily by four lengths from Tel' Tale, Redberry easing up several lengths off third. Barns's b g Otiti, aged, 6st 31b (Wood) 0 When the barrier was raised Otiti, who had been giving some trouble, hung back, and lost fully ten lengths, but when they had settled into their strides he rushed through, and before reaching the mile and a half post was in front, followed by Haria, The Brook, St. Paul and Light in close order. A little further on Light ran into second place, and coming down the straight was on terms with Otiti," Haria and The Brook, while St. Paul, Leda, Trentalto and Day Star were all close up, Nestor last of all. Going out of the straight Otiti was done with, and Light a little further on resigned to The Brook, and St. Paul, Blarney, Haria and Leda and Day Star also closing up. Turning into the straight St. Paul and The Brook were together, but Blarney on the outside came strongly, and at the same time Leda made a bid, and the pair draw-' ing away from The Brook a good race home ensued, Blarney outlasting the mare and winning by three parts of a length, Leda beating The Brook a length and a half, Day Star, who was placed third, a neck away. St. Corion led till entering the straight, with Defiant at his girths, but below the distance the whip was drawn on St. Conon and Defiant, without an effort, won by a length, Ocean five lengths off third. At the turn for home Kanaka and Torpina were together in advance of St. Paul, but" Sedgebrook came on the outside, and, catching his horses, got to Kanaka at the distance, and won cleverly by three-parts of a length.
