» . Owing to the very complete arrangements made by the officfers of the Cheviot Town Hall syndicate and the expedition and punctuality of the contractor, Mr Tweedie, the hall is already finished. The hall is, in every way, a credit to its promoters. A commodious stage has been erected, and scenery has been procured from the able brush of Mr J. H. Bradford, of Christchurch, whose artistic ability is shown to good effect. Ventilation, lighting and fire escape have been well attended to. Altogether, the Cheviot settlers are to be congratulated having at their disposal one of the best entertainment rooms, for a country place, iaSlSTew Zealand. On Wednesday evening a ball w&a held in the new Hall to celebrate the opening of the building. Notwithstanding the heat, and the fatigue occisioned thereby, aboutfifty couples -were present and spent a most enjoyable time, dancing being: kept up to an early hour. The catering, which was in the hands of Mrs Morrison, Was carried out with that lady's usual success. Messrs Graveson and Morray (violin and piano) supplied the music, which left little to be desired.
On Friday last a Magistrate's Court was held at the Land Office, M'Kenzie, Messrs Max Whatman and Jno. Vaughan, J.P.'s, presiding. John and William Jackman were charged with rescuing cattle from Joseph Lewis, Ranger for the Cheviot County Council. The defendants were each fined 5s each, and costs 293. Mrs Whittington was charged with using insulting language to Joseph Lewis whilst in the execution of hi3 duty as Ranger. The defendant was -fined £1, and costs 12s. Nominations for the Cheviot Racing Club's meeting on New Year's Day closed at Nott's Hotel on Wednesday evening, and from the number and quality of horses entered a capital day's sport is confidently looked forward to. Nominations for the Cheviot Athletic Club's meeting on Boxing Day are coming in well, and the Committee are sparing no trouble to make the fixture an enjoyable one. Several of the Cheviot athletes are in capital form, and close finishes are expected in most of the contests.
