SWEATING IN CHRISTCHURCH.
TO THK EDITOR OF THK PRKSS. Sir,—ln reply to a question in the House one day last session Mr Seddon stated, " While I am Minister of Labour sweating would not be allowed in any form. I will enquire into the cage referred to." May I ask the hon. gentleman why sweating is still allowed, and with the sanction, I believe, of one of his Inspectors ? A short time back girls in the workrooms had to go back from 7.30 to 10 p.m. Certainly they were paid, but what was the amount ? In come cases Hvcpencc (sd) for two-and-a-half hours' work. Of late tho groceru' assistants have been back nearly every night for the last five weeks from 7.50 to 10 and sometimes 11 p.m., but without auy extra pay. But if Mr Seddon was of the opinion that sweating would not be allowed wheu the House was sitting, I hope he is also of that opinion now, and will at once stop the work. —Yours, &c., R. Fife.
