ASHLEY MASONIC LODGE.
.»_ On Tliursday Dr. Zillman gave a lecture to the brethren of the Ashley Masonic Lodge at Rangiora. There was a large attendance, who received with attention the learned doctor's remarks on " Some Aspects of American Freemasonry." He .said the mysteries had been discovered among the American tribes before the advent of the paleface, and gave instances of «how the pure Indian had foimd shelter and companionship in the Lodges. The features of American Masonry were identical with ancient constitutions which rested on the faith of God, which was the keystone of the arch as well as the corner stone of the temple. Duties of brotherly kindness were enjoined, but American Masons did not gather often around the festive board. They had not, however, forgotten that a dinner lubricates business, nor had they lost taste for cool refreshment, which gave a shock of pleasure. In America women did not desire to be Masons, or voters, or policemen, or soldiers, or sailors, or navvies. The lecturer gave an account of the peculiarities of the American ritual, and referred to the great part which the influences of the Craft had in conserving the peace and promoting harmony. Bro. Bailey, M.M., conveyed to Bro. Zillman the hearty thanks of the Lodge in a motion which was moved by P.M. Bro. G. F. Smith and seconded hy Bro. Ball. Dr. Zillman said he should be pleased to give a Sunday service in the' Lodge if it could be arranged.
