Robert Stewart, of Blairadam, the winner of the 1894-95 Scottish Draughts Tourneys, writes to the Draughts Editor of the Glasgow Weekly Herald thus :—" Bridge House, Blairadam, October 13th, 1896. Sir, —I, the undersigned, hereby challenge Mr Richard Jordan, of Edinburgh, to play mc a restricted match of forty games, wins and. draws to count, for a stake of £50 a-side and the championship of the world. Would prefer match to commence six weeks after signing of articles.—l am, &c, Robsrt Stewart." Jordan replies under date Edinburgh, 21st October, and says:—"l have written an acceptance of Mr StewartV challenge. Bis tonus »r« yuM suitable* * «*▼•
suggested Saturday, 19th December, aa date of commencing play. I had a visit the) other day from a gentleman well known in draughts circles, and he rather surprised mc by producing a handsome gold medal which he intends to present to the winner. He had intended to give it to the winner of the Reed-Jordan match, but of course was disappointed." The Draughts World says :—The place of contest is not yet fixed, but take place where it may, it is one in which draughts players all over the world will take great interest, and, as it is not expected there will be any difficulties in the way, it ia quite possible that this trial of skill will be played for and settled before the end of the year. We have a shrewd idea as to the identity of the gentleman mentioned by Mr Jordan, and if our surmise is correct tho iucident will be only auother instance of his great interest in the game of draughts.
