AN APPEAL.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —A case which strongly appeals to the benevolent has lately come under my notice, and I feel sure that I have only to give the outlines to ensure sympathy of the practical kind. A young man who arrived in Christchurch from England about a year ago became soon afterwards a victim to acute rheumatism, which has affected his heart and left him so much of a cripple ih.it he is entirely unable to earn his living. Since his discharge from the Hospital some months ago he has found a refuge at the house of a widow who, I should %ay, has quite enough to do to support her own family, and who cannot be expected to be at the charge of a stranger indefinitely. When this resource fails he will Iks a permanent burden on the colony unless something is done to enable him to avail of the one means of cure, that of the hot baths at Hanmer. Dr. Murdoch, who did all that was possible for him at the Hospital, has great hopes that a month or two at Hanmer may affect a permanent cure. The co3t would be about £20, and surely this sum can be raised in Christchureh. Dr Murdoch has kindly offered to answer any questions regarding the case, and any subscriptions may be sent to him or to mc, and I have no doubt your good self will also consent to take charge of any that for convenience may be sent to your office.—Yours, &c, Thokn'hill Cooper. Christchurch, New Zealand, 17th December, 1396. [We shall be happy to acknowledge any subscriptions that may be sent to this office. —Ed. Press.]
