TO TOTE EDITOR dF THE PRESS. Sib,---Perhaps you will allow mc to lodge a protest against the whining attitude of Mr W. W. Collins and some of his supporters over that gentleman's defeat at the recent election. The fulsome flattery indulged in by some of these little-minded admirers of Mr Collins is truly siekenhig. Ti:eu Mr Collins himself, by th&"persi:sttent »jihij»ig and wheedling tone .that has become so characteristic of him, Would have us.believe that he is a mar%r, a Reformer if you please (with a capital R) sacrificed on the altar of bigotry and prejudice. Truly a large-minded man is Mr Collins. But until he displays a littlejmore robustness of character I don't thin J the Christchurch public will care to have "anything to do with him. Britishere are of opinion that if a man can't take a defeat he does not deserve a victory. I may say that if there is one defeated candidate I respect more than another in Canterbury it is Mr launders, the late member for Selwyn, the magnanimity of whom Mr would do well to copy. —Yours, &c, Iconoclast-. to the editor of the press. Sir,—Some or your correspondents seem to object to Mr Collins having a testimonial. Did they do so when Mr T. E. Taylor was collecting money to pay expenses for his libel casej? There is no comparison between the two. ~ One was for questionable work, while Mr Collins will be receiving l gratitude from people who believe in good works.
