THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—l trust that the speakers at the meeting to be held on Friday evening will be very explicit on the following point. We are opposed to the present Government for one reason, that it has run the country deeply into debt. Their supporters say we admit it, but it has been for objects that will return a profit. For instance, the buying estates in order to put people on the land, the lending money to settlers, the assistance to the Bank of New Zealand—all the money so spent, they say, will not incur loss and may result in a profit. Now the only satisfactory way to answer this is to produce figures—mere assertion on either side is useless. People say Cheviot is a big success. Is this really so ?, Let' it be demonstrated by furnishing a reliable profit and loss account. And so also of all the other Government land speculations. I maintain that we must educate the public. Show them that we have weighty reasons for our opposition to the present Government and we will succeed. Let us avoid as much as possible mere declamation and assertion.—Yours, &c, Member.
