Sydney, December 7. A report has been received from the Sacred Heart Mission in New Britain that smallpox is ravaging the group, and has swept away vast numbers of natives. Cannibalism is also rampant in some of the northern portions. In one village over fifty natives were killed and eaten. SUICIDE OF A BANK TELLER. Mri3ournb, December 7. Arthur Bell, teller at the Ballarat branch of the Commercial Bank, committed suicide by shooting himself with a revolver. Unrequited affection was the cause of the deed. A CUSTOMS OFFICER DROWNED Aβ the Customs launch was crossing from Port Melbourne to Williamstown a very heavy sea swept the stem of the vessel, taking the Customs officer and his wife overboard, former was drowned, but his wife was rescued in an exhausted condition.
