Polo.—There will be polo as usual this afternoon in the South Park. The sides will be A to L and M to Z, which should make a very even match. Mrs W. H. Lane is giving tea. Insufficient Police.—Sergeant Rutledge was unable to obtain extra police for Lyttelton yesterday, and consequently when a couple of excited partisans got to blows shortly after noon no policeman turned up for eight or ten minutes, by which time the little scrimmage was over. Personal. —Nearly every vessel in port was ablaze with bunting in honour of the wedding of Mr George Agar, son of Mr G. Agar, the well-known launch proprietor of Lyttelton, which was celebrated at Capetown yesterday. Cricket. —A match, Kaiapoi and Belfast, at the former place on Thursday, resulted in a win for the home team by 25 runs to 24, Higgins and Brown scoring best. A match was played at Rangiora on Friday between the Rangiora and SwannanoaClubs, resulting in a victory for the former, who made 93 to their Opponents' 53. Tub San Francisco Mail.—The Mahinapua, with the Sa'u Francisco mail, left Manukau at 2 O'clock yesterday afternoon, and Will reach Wellington to-night. The Corinna, which leaves Wellington at 11 o'clock to-night, will take on the Southern portion to Lyttelton. Magisterial.—At the Magistrate's Court, Christchurch, yesterday, there was no business for transaction. Students ov Truth.—Dr. Zillman will conduct service at the Social Hall, Madras street, to-morrow at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The subject for the evening service will be " Christ, our elder Brother." Local Wool Sali-is.—"-The second sale of the series of local wool sales will take place on Friday next at the Oddfellows' Hall, commencing at 9.30 a.m. The catalogues will close at 6 p.m. on Tuesday next. Bowling.—The opening, of the green of the Christchurch Bowling Club will take place this afternoon. Mr and Mrs Bonningtdn, the President and -Preside:: tea*.'of the Club, have invited a number of ladies and gentlemen to be present on the occasion. '■- The Temple.—At the services tomorrow forenoon, afternoon and evening Mr Corrie Johnston is to deal with the subjects of "A More Momentous Election," "The Government ot the World," "Prohibition with Power by the Coming King," "Is Your Name on the Roll t" Anniversary Day.;—The principal attraction for this day is undoubtedly the excursion to Akaroa in connection with the regatta there. The Union Company, considering the increasing popularity of this trip, have decided to put on two of their best steamers, viz., Waihora and Flora, and given fine weather the public have a treat before them. Canter-bury College.—Several mistakes were made in yesterday's report of the examination in the School of Engineering and Technical College. E. J. Harrison should have been E. J. Marriner, R. H. Cull has qualified for the second year Exhibition." Social.—An amalgamated Juvenile Oddfellows' social was held at the Oddfellows' Hall, Lichfield street, on Thursday. Prov. Candy, of the Addington Lodge; P.G. Skinner, of the Sydenham Lodge; Sister Pearce and members of the Sister Pearce Lodge. Sunday Services. — At the Durham street Methodist Church Rev. D. McNicoll will preach morning and evening, At East. Belt Rev. J. Orchard will preach at 11 a.m. and. 6.30 p.m., assisted by Rev. F. W. Isitt. At St. Asaph street Mission Rev. C. Porter will preach both morning and evening. At Trinity Congregational Church Rev. Sidney J.. Baker will preach at 11 and 6.30 p.m. The evening subject will be .* ■ Honest to blame, strong to pity." Akaroa Borough Council..-—An ordinary meeting was held on Wednesday evening. Present—The Mayor, Crs. Orbell, Checkley, Munro, Perm, McGregor, Taylor, Penlington and Heath. The financial statement showed receipts £813s Bd. Accounts passed for payment, £67 5s Bd. Mr Jolly was elected to take charge of the baths on the same terms as last year. The tender of Messrs H. G. Robinson and Co. was accepted at 7£ per cent, for the lease of the Akaroa wharf' for five years. The Mayor thanked the Councillors, and expressed the pleasure he had had with them during hiß two years of and the Councillors passed a vote of thank? to that gentleman. It was resolved thatj the salary to the incoming Mayor be 25 guineas. ' Richmond Amateur Swimming Club.— At a meeting of the Committee of this Club held last evening final arrangements were mode for the annual exhibition of water sports, which will be held in the Richmond bath this afternoon, commencing at 2.30. The Committee has drawn up a capital programme of thirteen events, including senior and junior relay races, plunging, high diving and turning competitions, polo match between the East Christchurch and Richmond Clubs, and a 100 yds scratch race. Given fine weather there should be a large attendance. Mr A. B. Truscott, the Club's champion, will make an attempt to lower the Canterbury record for fifty yards, and some of the lady members will give an exhibition of swimming. In the Pioneer Bicycle Club twenty miles road race, held on tho 4th inst.,thetwo fastest time men both rode "Atalanta" Bicycles. Manufactured by T. City Cotrsen. EiaxmoH. — A very numeronrfv signed requisition has been presented to* Dr. Mickle requesting him to come forward for the North-East Ward vacancy, caused* by the election of Cr. W. H. Cooper as Mayor. In response to the request Dr. Mickle has consented to be nominated. Theosophv.—At th* lodge room of the Theosophical Society to-morrow afternoon the subject for discussion will be " Thought Forms." On the following Sundays of this month, as will be seen t>y advertisement elsewhere, the subjects will be " The growth of character," " Dreams," " Theosophy and Prohibition." Meetings are held every Sunday at 3 p.m., to which the public are cordially invited. Opkrkota Performance. —The children attending the New Brighton school gave a performance last Friday evening of an operetta, written and composed by Mr Sydney Hawker, called " The Beggar Boy." The composition throughout is very tuneful, and reflects great credit on the composer, and the very large audience showed their appreciation of it by frequent encores. Miss Winny McAHstcr tilled the leading part in a most creditable manner.
