AUSTRALASIAN DEFENCE
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.
London, November 24.
Major-General Hutton, ex-Com-mandant of the New South Wales forces, gave a lecture at Aldershot on "Greater Britain." The Duke of Connaught being unwell, Lord William Seymour presided. General Hutton extolled the excellent military qualities of his Australian comrades, and expounded a federal scheme of defence. He dwelt at length on the want of. a continuous policy, and thought it would be wiser for the colonies to spend a larger amount on their own and Imperial defence. Major - General Tulloch, formerly Commandant in Victoria, declared that the success of the Australian defence was largely due to Victoria and the action taken by Sir F. T. Sargood in 1884. Lord Wm. Seymour advocated the setting up of an Imperial Council of Defence in London.
