INQUEST.

An inquest was held at the Mitre Hotel, Lyttelton, yesterday afternoon touching the death of Hugh Borlans, or McAuley, who was found drowned near No. . 7 wharf, on Sunday afternoon. The Coroner was Mr R. Beetham. Mr W. Cook was chosen foreman of the jury. Dr. Pairman deposed that death had been caused by drowning. Mr M. Cleary, Governor of the Gaol, deposed that deceased was discharged from the Lyttelton Gaol on Thursday, after serving four years' imprisonment. He had paid £4 18s 9_l to him Avhen discharged. A number of witnesses deposed to the movements of deceased until about 9.30 p.m. on Saturday. He had had several drinks, but was quite sober. The jury returned a verdict of ■•Found droAvned," there being nothing to show how deceased got into the water.
