AMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Amuri Council was held at Culverden on Saturday, September sth, 1896. Present—Messrs D. Rutherford (Chairman), D. D. Macfarlane, J. H. Davison, W. Thomson, F. H. Wilson and A. Macfarlane.
Tho Chairman's report was read as follows : —Since last meeting the following letters have been received:—From Mr R. Meredith, M.H.R., forwarding a communication he received from the Minister of Lands, in reply to a letter sent by him re subsidising the Council towards the cost of maintenance of the Lower Waiau bridge, stating that the matter will be considered when preparing the Estimates for the year. From Messrs Rhodes' trustees, stating that they have not sold nor given anyone authority to fence off the road between sections 60 and 61, fronting the North road, Rother i ham suburban land. From the Receiver of Land Revenue, Nelson, stating that he has paid into the Union Bank, Christchurch, £6 6s, being road thirds due to this Council up to August Ist, 1896. The labour gangs have, been employed during the month planting willows along the north bank of the Hurunui river, shifting a portion of the wire fence around the Hurunui willow plantation, in shingling some bad places near the Hurunui bridge, shifting v camp to St. Leonards, and in shingling and repairing a portion of the Kaiwara road and creek crossings, also in clearing off slips and repairing the Kaikoura and Hawks wood roads. As decided at last meeting, one man .was sent to clear slips and repair the* Acheron and Clarence roads. The receipts for the month are—General rate. £13 16s lid, special rates £112 7s 2d, dog tax 12s 6d, and publican's conditional license for Amberley races (Hoare) 5s ; total, £127 lis 7d. The report was approved of.
It was resolved to request Mr R. Williamson to remove the fence, &c, erected by him across the public road at Rotherham, between sections 60 and 61.
Mr D. Rutherford then gave notice that he would move at next meeting of the Council—" That all persons in the county of Amuri who have acquired authority from the Amuri County Council to erect gates across public roads running through their land must keep them properly hung, have notice boards fixed on each side of the gate, bearing the words, ' public road,' in letters of not lass than 3in in size, and have the roadway metalled 18ft each side of the gate, such roadway to be kept in good order to the satisfaction of the Council's overseer."
The Water-race Committee decided to in. spect a portion of the water-race between the headworks and concrete culvert, and if found necessary to erect some more small breakwaters to protect the water-race from being washed away by the Waiau river.
Accounts amounting to £163 15s lid were passed for payment.
