THE LATE MR J. E. FITZGERALD.

WELLINGTON, August 3. ■ The Government offices, also those of the City Cotporation, and of many private firms, were closed this afternoon as a mark of respect for the late Mr J. E. FitzGerald, and the flags on the shipping and . buildings in the city were lowered to half-f-Mt. The remains of the deceased gentle'nwn were buried in Bolton streeb Cemetery this" afternoon. The Bishop of Wellington j officiated at tha funeral service, assisted by ; theVen. Archdeacon Stock and the Key. ; Messrs Coffey, Sprott and Tisdall. The ! P*U bearers were Air J. C. Gaviu, Assistant ■ tJoatroher-Geueral, and the staff of the Audit Office ; and amongst the mourners **-re the Speakers of both Houses of Parliament, the Premier, the Minister for •"•ducation (the Hon. W. C. Walker), aud the heads of the various Government Departments. His Excellency the Governor w *s . represented by Major Elliott, «»* Private Secretary, and Captain Utnpbell Preston, A.D.C. Tne cortege " o " a s a very lengthy one, and included * huge number of the members of both Hoasei of Parliament, the Mayor and Councillors, and clergymen of various denominations, besides a large number of citizeus. The floral tributes were numerous, and ••re sent from all parts of the colony.
At the meeting of the City Council last B ut a resolution was passed placing on JJcordita high appreciation of Mr Filzv»erald'- sterling integrity, unblemished Cn »ractßr, and conspicuous ability as a public officer and colonial statesman. Ib * v -Iso decided to send a copy of the •Solution to Mrs FitzGerald.
