OTAGO.
Duskd-M*, June 8. Preparations for vacating Forbury course iv favour of one at Taieri were advanced a sta*»e last week. Advantage was taken of the presence of Mf Hudson, sub-inspector of the railways, to obtain an interview, by the Dunedin Jockey Club, with a.-view of discussing the question of fares by railway. Mr Hudson said that the railway department would assist the club as much as possible in the way of giving reasonably cheap fares, and he would refer the matter to the general manager in Wellington and give the club an answer in a day or two. In pursuance of the same project the club's sub-committee again vi-ited Taieri on Saturday, accompanied by Mr Robert Hay, the club's engineer, also a Tailway representative, who went out to report a3 to the necessary sidings, &c. It is imderskood that within the last day or two another site has been put under offer to the Club. This evening's paper gives currency to a rumour that if the Club do resolve on a, purchase at the Taieri, Oughten's property will be preferred. As to distances from town, most of the sites deemed eligible would probably be approached from Wingatui station. This by line is eight miles ten chains from Dunedin. Ordinary trains take forty minutes on the journey, but it could be done faster by special. Ordinary fares to Wingatui are 2s 3d first class return, and Is 6d second class. ,
Malcolm Allan, once a crack light-weight rider, and* for some time past trainer and owner, having been burnt out of the London Hotel, has bought Outred's Palmerston Hotel.
The Taieri Club have practically got over their difficulty aboub the course, the stewards, who guaranteed the banker the overdraft, having agreed to buy the course at a price covering the club's liability.
The Auckland meeting was not favourable to local backers. I hear of one man who had £11 on Hopgarden, but I fear he stands pretty well alone. . >
