Also "The History of Our Own Times," "The Hietoiy of the Four Georges," &c. i "THE RIDDLE RING" is clever, lifelike, charming, unconventional. Mr justin McCarthy, m.p. Has played the several parts of politician, journalist, historian and novelist with unique oredit and success. Opinions may differ, with regard to hia politics, but it is universally acknowledged that Mr MoCarthy is a man of exceptional ability and high character. He is recognised as a leading and powerful journalist, whilst his "History of Our Own Times " achieved phenomenal success second only to that of Macaulay. Noirels, however, snoh as our new story, « THE RIDDLE RING," ' are his forte, as well as relaxation. Works of fiction afford greater soope for his imaginative genius, unrivalled experience, and natural sympathy for various types ot character. An atmosphere of cheerfulness and humour seems to pervade all Mr McCarthy's stories, which are essentially pleasant books. They are written in a Birnple, refined style, which 'is distinctly refreshing. The reader instinctively feels that the author has enjoyed writing these works, and reads the closing words with a sigh of regret. "THE RIDDLE RING" opens with the discovery of a mysterious ring by a young Englishman. _He has journeyed to Paris as a means of distraction ' from the misery consequent on a rejection by h'.s sweetheart, and is strolling through one of the parks when be comes across a ring whioh possesses a peculiar inscription. "One of the purest and sweetest of living storytellers. Abounds in vivid and picturesque sidelights, drawn with a strong and simple touch."— Leeds Mercury. "' "One is impressed with the author's versatility and wide range of interests.
