PRIZES AT SHOWS. TO -UK EDITOR OT THE PRESS. Sir, —The first agricultural winter show closed on the 28th inst. D> the exhibitor and the visitors to the dairy branch at the show benefit; to any extent by such shows ? Ia answering this question it is necessary to keep in mind the principal iutention of a show, viz., to raise the standard of the exhibit*. How is this done? By competent and careful comparison of the exhibits, aud by bestowing prizes on those producers who show the choicest articles within etch class. This system is quite correct as long as really first-class articles are amongst the exhibits, but 1 find that a first sometimes is conferred npon articles which are not worthy of such award, not even in the estimation of the judges, and this is .what I want to get at, because snob mistake ia
