The English Derby will be run on Wednesday next. Canard is said to have become Mr G. P. Donnelly's property at £150. Norton has been sent by Mr Gollan to Ireland for a change of air. Ballyhooley is expected at Auckland from Sydney by the next steamer. The Takapuna course had to be rolled after each event on Monday ! Gillie was scratched on Tuesday for the Great Northern Steeplechase. Gillie was heavily backed in Chriscthnrch for the Wanganui Steeplechase. The old New Zealander Pasha, by Mate— Rose d'Amour, died in Sydney recently. The judge's verdict in the Dunedin Birthday Handicap was "a short head" win for Quiltiri. No previous winner of the Northamptonshire Stakes received such a warm reception as did Paris. The owner of Captive when he paid a dividend of £74 at Forbury on Saturday did not have a penny on him. C. Wood has had his application for a jockey's license definitely declined by the English Jockey Club. It is understood that his new owner intends nominating Bloodshot for the Newmarket Handicap. Mr W. Douglas has purchased Tiritea, and it is said he will shortly be sent to Australiain company with Mutiny. Dan, a gelding by Daniel O'Rourke—Black Bess, broke his leg during the Pony Race at Takapuna on Monday and was destroyed. i The acceptances disclosed but twelve de- ! fections from the North New Zealand Grand National Hurdles, and seven from the Steeplechase. The owner of Quiltiri was lucky enough to strike the double at Danedin, Quiltiri and Maremma, accepting 200 to 3 about the combination. Mousquetaire, Culloden, Sternchaser, and Pounamu leave Wellington by the s.s. Wakatipu on Tuesday next. F. Luan will be in charge. Burns on Vanilla, and Wilson on Bizarre, were fined by the starter for disobedience at the post in the Tradesmen , * Handicap at the Forbury on Saturday. The Wanganui owner of Sou-Wester is exchanging him for the forthcoming covering season for the Musket stallion Catesby, who has been doing stud duty in the Marlborough district. Hova was handicapped at 103t 3lb for the Adelaide Racing Club Birthday Cup run for on Monday last, Warpaint with 9st 131b was placed second on the list. In the City Handicap, seven furlongs, Hova liad lOst 51b and Warpaint lOat. The amount put through the totalisatora at the D.J.C.'s two days Birthday Meeting was £9503 10s. £8330 was the total at the Takapuna J.C.s meeting on the same days. No less a sum than £10,035103 was invested at the Canterbury Trotting Club's Birthday fixture!
In the Calendar this week the Gisbbrne Park Steeplechase Club's programme for July 9th is given. As compared with the bill of fare last season there are several additions to the prizes to note. Increased sums are given in both the hunters' events, in the flat race and in the Hack Hurdles. Jn all £300 is. to be given away, and being equitably divided, there is almost sure to be extensive patronage given by horse owners.
