SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Sydenham Borough Counoil was held yesterday evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr J. Brown), Councillors Hadfield, Caygill, Budd, McLennan, Muffett, Clifford, MoMillan, Hirtzel, Billoliff, Mauhire, Large and Cutler.
A letter was received from the Commissioner of Police, stating that aa soon tv a man was available a new constable would be sent to Sydenham to replace the constable recently removed. Letters were also read—From the Selwyn Council, tbe Drainage Board (re rates),, the Municipal Association, the Canterbury branch of the Brunner relief fund; the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards that the amounts due respectively this year were JBIB4 8s and £217 18s Id, the Canterbury Rugby Union • re use of Park, and were dealt with.
The Works Committee recommended the acceptance of the tender of Mr H. Shaw for the supply of a gross of bass brooms, and reported having authorised the gravelling of the roadways of Hcathcote terrace and Tennyson Btreet. The report was adopted. Tne Finance Committee reported that thp receipts since last meeting had amounted to £625 16a lid. The balances of accounts to date were :—Credit — Separate Trustaccount, £63 8s 7d ; interest account, £546 lis 7d; loan account, £5184 lis lid. Debit—General account, £374912s 4d. The amount of rates levied for 1895 was £4593 19s 7d, and the amount collected to April 4th was £3986 0s 6d. Accounts amounting to £132 3s 4d were recommended to be passed for payment. The report was adopted. The Cemetery Committee reported that it had considered the question of opening up an additional road to the new cemetery, aud had received two offers of land for the purpose. The Committee was unanimously of opinion that the extension of Simeon Street through Mr S. Smart's laud would make tbe best entrance, and recommended that the offer made iv Messrs Smart and Son's letter of March 29th, to sell land for that purpose, should be accepted. Tha report was adopted, Crs. Caygill and Large dissenting. The Council adjourued at 10 p.m.
