OPERATIC SOCIETY.
The Sydenham Operatic Society gave the first performance of the well-known comic, opera " Les Oioohes dcs Corneville," in the Opera House last evening, in aid of the Brunner Relief Fund. There was a good attendance, and the Society are to be com* plimented upon the success which waa achieved in the production of the opera. The performers, wich the exception of one or two of the principals, were juveniles, and they acted and sang with brightness and spirit. Miss Woods made a stately Marquis, and sang well, but requires to. raise her voice more' in the spoken parts. ' Miss Everit Haggio scored a distinot success as Serpolette, acting with intelligence and vivacity, and Miss Maggie Watson as Grenicheux was also remarkably good. She aang the music allotted to her very nicely indeed, and also aoted well. The part of Germain does not give much scope for acting, but Miss Louisa Lawrence I filled ib very well, and sang excellently. s Mr F. Meyer made a capital Bailie, and Master Sparks as Gobo showed much oleverness, and was extremely good in tha by-play with the Bailie. He was recalled for the spider dance. Mr .T. A. Reid waft very successful in the part of Gaspard, the miser. The minor parts were very well filled. The ohoruses, with one or two exceptions, were capitally sung, and■ th« orchestra oarried out their work efficiently. The opera was given under the direction.of Mr A. J. Sparks, who has evidently takex great pains in training the performers. 3JhC opera will be ropeated to-night.
