NEWS OF THE DAY.
The Weekly Press.—The large edition of bhe Weekly Press prepared for this week having been exhausted early yesterday afternoon, a second edition was printed, copies of whioh are now obtainable. Personal. -Dr. Arthur Crosby, of this city, who, after taking his degrees of M.R.C.S. and L.R.C.P. at Middlesex Hospital, Loudon, was for some time in charge of the Hospital at Sfcroud, Gloucestershire, is returning to New Zealand as surgeon on board the s.s. Morayshire. Bitten by a Katipo.—A youth named Mcintosh was bitten by a katipo spider near the Kaiapoi beach on Thursday. The part bitten waa one of his knuckles. As the hand swelled very much Dr. Parsons was called into attendance.
Phojnix Assurance Company.—As will be seen by a notification elsewhere, Messrs Pitcaithly, Wallace and Co. have been appointed district agents of the above Company, consequent on the resignation of Mr L. A. Cuff.
Association Football.—The annual meeting of the Christchurch Club will be held at the Clarendon Hotel to-nighb at eight o'clock.
PaoFKSSoa Kennedy.—This gentleman, who has been mystifying the North Islanders with his mesmeric feats, will open his season at the Opera House here on Monday next. The plan of the reserved seats opens to-day at Messrs Milner and Thompson's. Wbdding.—A very pleasant gathering took place on Good Friday at the residence of Mrs Pitcaithly, Rook Bound Villa, Pigeon Bay, the occasion being the marriage of Miss Pitcaithly and Mr G. Whitelaw, schoolmaster at Sedgemere. The many useful presents received by the bride and bridegroom showed that their friends had not forgotten them. Fabewbll Social.—At the Flemington School on Friday evening the mistreßS (Miss Cook), who is leaving the district, having been promoted to Akaroa, was entertained at a farewell social. Fully 150 persons sat down to tea. Mr J. Dunn, Chairman of the School Committee, presided, and on behalf of the children of the day school and their parents, .and the teachers of the Sunday School, presented Miss Cook with a handsome marble clock and wribing desk. Fibks.—An alarm of fire was given in Rangiora on Wednesday evening. It was occasioned by a stack of pea straw belonging to Mr c. Ayers being on fire.—Aba quarter to nine last night a fire broke out in the engine room of Lucas 8r03.% engineers, Kilmore street. The close proximity of the Chester screet station enabled the Fire Brigade to have a chemical engine very quickly on the spot, with the result that the fire was prevented from spreading and little damage was done. The fire is supposed to have been caused by the igniting of some shavings which had been placed on the boiler to dry.

Valedictory.—On Wednesday evening a number of the residents of Rakaia assembled at the Oddfellows' Hall to bid good-bye to Mr J. A. Bruce, who is leaving the district. An address signed by the residents aud members of the Cricket, Football and Swim« ming Clubs was read by Mr Jas. Thompson, . and Mr 0. A. 0.
