Wwlungton-, April 8. A Magisterial enquiry into the wreck of the schooner John Belt at Terawhiti ou March 18th was held to-day. Captain VVMiama said he left Wellington for Nelson with fair weather, and retired ab 11 p.m. He returned to the deck about miduight and foaud the vessel in d»uger. Ho ordered the helm to be pub hard down. The vessel struck almost immediately. The weather was clear when he firefc retired, otherwise he would not have gone below. Had a proper look out been kept there could nave been no danger. The accident nrght ha.'c fcten attributable to the vessel breaking off a lot. Guaiay Orbez, the mate, deposed that when he took charge he was not informed of the vessel's poeitiou, or what course to take. When he saw land he was about to bring the vessel about but it was too late. Had he been aware of the distance from land the accident might have been avoided. At the time he did not think it necessary to call the captain, but believed he sheuld have done so. After the members oi the crew bad been examined the Bench reserved its decision until the morning.
