ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES.
The arrivals in the colony in March were 1373, and the departures 2199. NELSON GIRLS' COLLEGE. For the post of lady housekeeper at the Nelson Girls' College there were thirty-six applications. The Colonist reports that Mrs Bain, of Christchurcb, was appointed. THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the Union Company has been advised that the Alameda left San Francisco for Auckland on the 2nd instant, the due date. AN UNEXPECTED FIND. The following paragraph appeared in yesterday's Otago Daily Times -.—A citizen who last Saturday invested the sum of 8d in purchasing a plateful of necks and gizzards from a well-known poulterer in Rattray street was rewarded in the cleaning by obtaining about 15gr of coarse, shotty gold. The citizen is ua the look-out for more gizzttrds, while the poulterer has for the future resolved to clean before selling. It would be interesting to know whence the birds (wild ducks) obtained the precious metal. THE UNEMPLOYED. At Wellington yesterday, at an inter* view with the Minister for Publio Works, the unemployed pressed for work of soma kind, stating that some families were almost starving. Objection was expressed to applying for charitable aid. It was stated that single men were getting married for no other reason than that married men were given preference. The Minister asked for a list, aud said the Government were doing all they could with the means at their disposal. In a fortnight a> few men would probably be fouud employment on the Central Trunk Railway. BLENHEIM GIRLS' SCHOOL. The deadlock bet ween the Blenheim School Committee and the Education Board over the question fit the appointment of a pupil teacher, which resulted in the Com mi , , tee closing the Girls' School, has been omled. The Chairman of the Education Board, after making a futile effort to gain admission to the schooihonie, wrote to the Committee acoepting the suggestion that their respective solicitors should draw up a case for submission, not to the Minister for Education or Sir R. Stout, as the Committee suggested, but to a Judge of the Supreme Court. The achooi baa, therefore, been reopened. WATERMEN'S BOATS. The Works Committee of the Dunedin Harbour Board have approved of the draft of a by-law dealing with the subject of licensing watermen's boaw. It provides that each boat must have airtight tanks in the bow and etern, or as many more, aud such other appliances as may be approved of. DUNEDIN FIRE BRIGADE. The report of the Captain of the Duoedin Fire Brigade shows that the Brigade attended thirty-eight fires in the city during the year, the whole of which had been ytbwytily extinguished before auy aerioos,
damage was done. Tiia insurance on the property atcended amounted to £13,755, aud the loss to the various Companies interested was only £1005. For th 2 preceding year tne calls were Htty-three, tha insurance ou property £11,935, and the lo*s amounted to £2675. Challenge Stakes of the miny cigarettes now on the market.
