ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF A CLERGYMAN.
The Rev. F. J. Sothara, incumbent of the Anglican pariah at Waimate, waa thrown from his buggy on Sunday afternoon, and died in a few hoars. His skull was smashed, and he was never conscious. He waa driving alone a>6 the time. The deceased was formerly a captain in the Navy, but left and joined tha Church. He had been stationed as minister at Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, and Waikouaiti. He leaves a widow and five children.
The inquest was held at the Waimate Hospital on Monday. Mr J. Manchester acted as Coroner. .Evidence was given by Frederick Sothatn, Joseph Nind, Daniel Goodwood, Wm. Geddes. ffm. Haines, Dr. Cooke, and Constable Parker. The fact* were as previoasly stated. Mr Geddes saw the horse bolting with the empty buggy, Mr Haines stopped the horse and assisted Mr Geddes to convey the unfortunate gentleman to the Hospital, where he died about 5 p.m. The jury returned a verdict '* That deoeaeed met hi* death by a baggy accident, but that there was no evidence to show how it occurred." Quite a gloom has been cast over the town by the sad accident, as deceased was universally respected, and much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved widow and family.
