NAPIER, February 21. Mr H. S. Tiffen, one of the pioneer settlers of Hawke's Bay, died this morning, aged -eventy-seven. He came.to the colony in 1841 as a surveyor under engagement to the New Zealand Company, and landed at Wellington, being one of the first to cross the Rimutaka. On the separation of Hawke'a Bay from Wellington and the establishment of Provincial Government, Mr Tiffen became Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands, which office he held for many years. On his .resignation he became a member of the Provincial Council, and when the provinces were abolished was the first Chairman of the Hawke's Bay County Council. Many a case of charity has benefited by his bounty. He leaves two brothers and a sister—Mrs Haselden, of Wellington.
