He defended the Government policy and asserted that the surpluses were real. The charge of sly borrowing w *» disingenuous aud unfair. He also defended the tariff, and declared that no additional burdens had been placed on the people.- The increased Customs revenue was due to the increased duty on items not affected by *he new tariff. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried withonb opposition.
