The compilation of the statistics in oow nectton with the ocean carrying trade ta Auatralaaia during 1895 afforda some interesting information aa the change whioh htf occurred during the past five yeara in iU character. For inatance, in 1891 the par. centage of abeam vesaela employed w m trade at that date was 57.43 per cant., ao* sail 42 57. In 1895 the ateam had advanced to 69 94 per cent., while> tw> sail had declined to 3006 per -cent. Another feature in the trade haa Been the introduction of ahipa of Ur«er carryine capacity, what wore known ior merly as "handy" vessel..being now impplanted by big carriers. Hence, •&""£ in 1895 the total number of veaaela despatched from the United X"- 00 ™ ™ Auatralaaia is -.mailer, the groaa tonnage » larger. The annual report of James »« Ewan and Co,, Limited, atatea, that the -. tonnage returns for last year show a con siderable improvement on thoaa of the two despatched amounted to oW'CW_ w' . 1894 it.was 695,117 tons, 1 , increased to 727,817 tons. *££» £
