INTERNATIONAL CYCLE MEETING.

SECOND DAY.

The eeoond day of the tuternatioaal oyole race meeting, held under the management) of the OhrUtohuroh Cycling Club yesterday, at Lanoaster Park, was attended by about) 2000 people. The weather was fairly favourable; the aou'-wester which was blowing made it cooler for the spectators, but interfered with fast times. Pither again showed his superiority over Martin, the American, and Harris, the Bngluft ohampiou, by winning the One Mile Handioap and the Ten Mile Test Race. He lay third or fourth moat of the way, and thea came on with a powerful spurt in the straight, beating the American by about ten yards. Hunt, a member of the Raugitikei Cycling Club, secured the One-and-a-half Mile Ladies' Bracelet Handicap, and Three Mile handicap. The Half-mile Cavour Handioap, for offioials only, afforded some amusement, as the competitors had to ride while smoking cigars. The One and a Half-Miw Ladies' Bracelet was a repetition of the New Zealand Wheel Race on Saturday, as far as the form displayed by the scratch men was concerned, for they failed to make up enough of their handicap to make the race interesting. The Tandem Race was one of the best races of the day. Harria and Martin, the scratch men, aoon made op ground and, after waiting on the leadera until the last lap, came with a most brilliant spurt completely outpacing their opponents. Attempts were mad* by Harris, Pither and Martin to lower the half-mile, two miles and one mile .colonial records respectively. They all failed, however. Hariris, who was paced by Martin and Boyd on a tandem, came very near to breaking the half-mile re* cord.misaing it by four-fifths of aeecond only. He pedalled exceedingly well, aud had the wind not been so strong would, no doubt, have succeeded. Pither made his attempt) shortly after his riding in the ten-mile race and in the Ladies' Bracelet. Ho waa paced by Clarkson and Soaines, and also by Martin, and Harria, but the former pair made the mistake of getting too far in frout of him, a f&ot which nullified all the advantage of pacing. Hβ gave up eventually without! covering the distance. Martin's attempt at the one mile record also was made uudec unfavourable conditions, as ho had just ridden threw miles iv the tandem race. When the pistol waa fired Martin fell and the limit men had gong almost round the course before they could be stopped and the raoe started again. Martin got the worat of the fresh start, but soon made up lost ground, and he, Pithei and Harria aoon began to olote on the leaders. Ledez out out the running tor the" first few hundred yards, the aoratoh men gradually saining on him. Paeeing tho old pavilion Pither was lying second, and Martin aixth. Coming along the baok stretch Pither waa leading, and Martin, who was pedalling fast, in cioae attendance, and Barker third. A splendid raoe then ; ensued between Pither and the American, i ending in the former creasing tho line sixteen yards ahead, Martin easiug up second, and Barker three yards away third. Coming along the back etretob Chainey passed Dunn and went in pursuit) of Hunt, but the latter, K<" n ? well within himself, won by about 60 yards, Obainey boing eeoond and Duuu two yards, away third. In the third lap, these positions were maintained except) that Boyd bad dropped back to last place* . At the fifth lap Boyd again went up, the rest keeping their places. Martin then led the field lap after lap, the monotony being varied occasionally by a sprint bj Boyd. The men were all riding in a beautifully even line, waiting for the struggle ,et the end. At the second to lust lap they came up in a cluster, Martin still leading, while Pither improved bis position. In the last lap the order wm, Martin, Harris, Pither, the rest in a bunch. Clarkson then made hie effort, but aoon fell back, leaving Pither, Martin, and Harris to fight it out. A fine struggle followed between ■ the two first named, but the ex-New Zealander, pedalling stronger - than the American, distanced his rival, winning eventually by six yards, Harris ft good third. greatest ease by about fifty yardt. It was one of the prettiest racea of the day, and the winners are to be congratulated on the fact that, although they had the race well in hand from the start, they made it an in t crating one to the spectators right to the end.

A smoke concert was held in the rooms of the Christchurch Cyoling Club laet evening, when there was a very large attendance of members and visitors, including several members of the Pionper B.C. Mr R. C. Bishop, President of the Club, occupied the chair. The table wee nicely decorated with pot plants, &c., and Hbsrally laid with light refreshments. The following toasts were duly honoured, "lhe Queen ;" •' The Visitors," proposed by Mr A. 0. Dutt and responded to by Messrs Greig, Martin and Harris ; " Successful Competitors," proposed by Mr Tomkins and responded to by Messrs Martin, Harris and others ; " Unsuccessful competitors," proposed by Mr H. Baker and responded to by Messrs J. Boyd, Hogg, and Tomkins ; "Kindred Clubs," proposed by Mr Tomkins, and responded to by Messrs Joss, Murie, J. W. Jones and H. Thompson; "The Press," and "The President and Vice Presidents." responded to by the Chairman and Mr F. Wildey. Daring the evening songs and recitations were given by Messrs Reid, Kally, Taylor, Collins, Joss, Pope, ijoanes, Ryan, Pannell and others, and an enjoyable time was ■pent.
